ServSafe Manager Exam Day Checklist

2026-09-01By ExamReady Team

What the morning of your ServSafe exam looks like

The ServSafe Manager exam is administered at Pearson VUE testing centers (computer-based) or at NRA-approved in-person locations (paper-based). The exam is 90 questions with a 2-hour time limit. You will spend about 30 minutes in check-in and ID verification, 2 hours on the exam, and 10 minutes on a post-exam survey.

Most candidates arrive 30 minutes early to handle check-in. The check-in process is faster than you think if you bring the right documents, but missing one item can delay your start time.

What to bring to the test center

| Item | Required | Notes | |------|----------|-------| | Government-issued photo ID | Yes | Driver's license, passport, or state ID. Must be unexpired. | | Second form of ID | Yes | Social Security card, credit card, or employee ID | | ServSafe Manager Certificate Number | Yes | From your NRA course completion | | Light jacket or sweater | Optional | Test centers vary in temperature |

Pro Tip: Complete the NRA ServSafe course first

The ServSafe Manager exam requires prior completion of an NRA-approved ServSafe Manager Course. The course is typically 8-16 hours and is offered online or in-person at NRA-approved training providers. You cannot sit for the exam without a current course-completion certificate.

What NOT to bring

| Item | Status | Reason | |------|--------|--------| | Cell phones | Prohibited | Even in airplane mode | | Smart watches and fitness trackers | Prohibited | Including Apple Watch, Fitbit | | Bags, purses, and backpacks | Prohibited | Must be stored in locker | | Food and drinks | Limited | Water in a clear bottle is allowed | | Notes, study materials, and flashcards | Prohibited | Cannot reference during exam | | Headphones and earbuds | Prohibited | Including noise-cancelling | | Hats and hoods | Prohibited | Religious headwear is allowed |

The ServSafe Manager exam format

The ServSafe Manager exam is 90 multiple-choice questions with a 2-hour time limit. The exam is computer-based at Pearson VUE centers or paper-based at in-person NRA-approved locations.

The exam covers seven content domains:

| Domain | Approximate weight | |--------|-------------------| | Foodborne Illness and Microbiology | 22% | | Contamination, Allergens | 15% | | Personal Hygiene | 15% | | Sanitation and Pest Management | 15% | | Cleaning and Sanitizing | 10% | | Receiving and Storage | 10% | | HACCP and Flow of Food | 13% |

The passing score is 75% (68 of 90 correct). The exam is not adaptive — every candidate sees the same 90 questions in a randomized order.

What to expect during the exam

Once seated, you will see the welcome screen. Read it carefully — it explains the flag-for-review feature and the clock display. The clock counts down even when you are on the flag-for-review screen, so do not over-flag questions.

You can flag questions for review and return to them before submitting. Use this feature sparingly: if a question is genuinely uncertain, flag it and move on, but do not flag more than 15 questions.

Watch Out For: The temperature-control trap

ServSafe exam writers frequently include questions about the temperature danger zone (41°F-135°F) with answer choices that are close together (40°F vs 41°F vs 45°F). Memorize the danger-zone boundaries exactly: cold food must be held at 41°F or below, hot food at 135°F or above. Mixing these up is the most common reason candidates fail.

After the exam

When you submit the exam, you will see a preliminary pass/fail result on the screen. The official ServSafe Manager certificate arrives by email within 7-10 business days. If you pass, your certification is valid for 5 years.

If you do not pass, the score report includes a domain-by-domain breakdown showing which areas need more work before a retake. The retake policy requires waiting 30 days and paying the exam fee again.

The 48 hours before exam day

The day before the exam should be light review only. Re-read your notes on the big-6 pathogens, the temperature danger zone, and the FDA Food Code's HACCP requirements. Do not start any new content, and stop studying by 6 PM. Sleep 8 hours. Eat breakfast on exam day.
